QuEra, Harvard and MIT distill magic states on error-protected logical qubits
Jul 14, 2025
A QuEra, Harvard and MIT team reported in Nature what it calls the first distillation of "magic states" done entirely on logical qubits (error-protected qubits built from many atoms). On a neutral-atom computer, five imperfect magic states were turned into one of higher quality.
Why it matters
Error-protected qubits can easily run only part of the operations an algorithm needs; magic states supply the rest, so making them inside the protected layer is a key step toward fault tolerance.
