IonQ reports 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, which it calls a world record
Oct 21, 2025
IonQ released papers reporting two-qubit gates (the basic entangling operation) with fidelity above 99.99%, fewer than 1 error in 10,000, on prototype trapped-ion systems built with technology from its Oxford Ionics unit. IonQ says this beats the previous record of 99.97%, set by Oxford Ionics in 2024.
Why it matters
Two-qubit gate errors are a main limit on what quantum computers can run; crossing "four nines" would cut the overhead needed for error correction, if it holds up on full-size systems.
