Google shows a larger error-correcting code can make fewer errors
Feb 22, 2023
Google Quantum AI reports in Nature that a logical qubit (an error-protected qubit built from many physical ones) made from 49 physical qubits made slightly fewer errors than one made from 17. Google says no quantum computing platform had shown this before.
Why it matters
Error correction only helps if adding qubits to a code lowers the error rate; this experiment showed that trend on real hardware, although the improvement was small.

Suppressing quantum errors by scaling a surface code logical qubit
“We find that our distance-5 surface code logical qubit modestly outperforms an ensemble of distance-3 logical qubits on average, in terms of both logical error probability over 25 cycles and logical error per cycle”

Suppressing quantum errors by scaling a surface code logical qubit
“To that end, we use a particular error-correcting code called a surface code and show for the first time that increasing the size of the code decreases the error rate of the logical qubit. A first-ever for any quantum computing platform, this was achieved by painstakingly mitigating many error sources as we scaled from 17 to 49 physical qubits.”
