Innsbruck physicists teleport the quantum state of a photon
Dec 1997
Anton Zeilinger's group at the University of Innsbruck reports in Nature that it has teleported the polarization state of one photon onto another, using a pair of entangled photons. A team at Sapienza University of Rome posted a similar experiment in October 1997.
Why it matters
The Nobel committee describes it as the first experiment of its kind. Teleportation is seen as a key ingredient for quantum networks, and the work fed into Zeilinger's 2022 Nobel Prize.
