Yuri Manin notes that classical computers struggle to imitate quantum systems
1980
In his 1980 Russian-language book Computable and Uncomputable, mathematician Yuri Manin points out that simulating a system of many quantum particles on a classical computer has an exponential cost, and speculates about "quantum automata" with highly unusual behavior.
Why it matters
Like Feynman's 1981 talk, it points to the core motivation for quantum computers: quantum systems are far too complex for ordinary computers to simulate efficiently.

Quantum computing 40 years later
“In his 1980 book Computable and Uncomputable [2], Manin, like Feynman, cogently emphasized the exponential cost of simulating a many-particle particle system with a classical computer.”
